Election Eve wisdom
First of all, the final tally on our Obama signs was four. The last theft occurred on Halloween day when a group of teenagers (as spied by a neighbor who didn't managed to actually nab them) went throughout the neighborhood stealing both McCain and Obama signs in their non-partisan trouble making. We didn't replace it, but obviously that didn't make a bit of a difference on the election outcome.
On the night before the election just a month ago, B suddenly piped up at dinner: "You know what's cool about McCain?" Daddy-o and I made eye contact at that point with skeptical looks on our faces wondering what the heck our child was about to say. "Cool" and "McCain" were not words we had used in the same sentence nor was it likely he would have heard such sentiments at his liberal hippie school. But B continued, "If McCain dies and has to use his Vice President, then we would have the first woman President." Daddy-o and I then stifled laughter at that sentiment. Daddy-o explained that the President doesn't have to die to "use" his Vice President and that sometimes the Vice President takes over when the President is sick.
B then continued, "And you know what is cool about Obama?" Daddy-o and I held our breaths at this point, unsure what would come next after the last words of wisdom. B answered his own question, "If Obama is elected, we'll have the first President from Africa!" We laughed at this one and helped clear up the misconception that no, Obama is not from Africa but his father was born there. Obama is an American, just like B. But we did agree that he would be the first President with dark skin and that would be cool.
