sprinklers and ant bites
B is highly allergic to ant bites. He isn't allergic enough to have prompted us to get an epi-pen, but we do worry about him. There can be 20 kids in a yard with no ant hill in site, and then he will get bit. After being around B, I believe the theory that people who are allergic to bug bites
give off pheromones of some kind to attract the bugs to them. He's had one bite that blew up his hand like a balloon; we took him in to the doctor because we thought he might have broken something since the bite hadn't formed a head yet.
This is yesterday's casualty. We were playing in the sprinklers in the front yard, and there was a mound in the sidewalk. We told B to stay away from it, but he didn't remember at one point and went charging through it. He has six bites on his left foot which is red and painfully sw
ollen despite topical Benadryl and cortisone cream. We've tried various homeopathics for ant bites and have had zero success with them on him. He's limping around the house and having Daddy-o carry him whenever possible. (This is after last weekend when he sprained his right knee on Friday doing heaven knows what. He was in so much pain on Friday night that he couldn't sleep, and his knee/leg was red and inflamed. We took him to the doctor for x-rays on that one, but it was fine. He was running by Sunday, but on Friday and Saturday, Daddy-o was carrying him.)
Aside from the trauma of the ant bites, the kids had lots of fun playing in the sprinkler. It was ridiculously hot out there. The local weather stations said 95 degrees, but it felt a lot hotter when standing in the sun. I'm not thrilled by summer's return. I'm still waiting for the winter that never showed up this year.
