strawberries
We went to Boggy Creek Farm this morning to get fresh strawberries. The newsletter that Carol Ann, the owner, sends out had said that there wouldn't be any strawberries available for the kids to pick (though there would be some picked by the employees), but when we got there, we were delighted to find that the strawberries had come into season. There were tons of gorgeous red strawberries ready to be picked. J hadn't wanted to go this morning unless there were strawberries to pick. All three kids were happy to get into the fields and pick strawberries. Then they were even happier to eat them after we paid for them. J will not eat the California grown strawberries that we buy at Whole Foods. She says they don't taste the same. She's right. They are nowhere near as sweet and juicy and ripe as the ones grown locally. Those California ones are a breed that is meant to travel without bruising. These local ones barely make it back to our house without getting squished. She also won't eat the
frozen ones because the texture isn't the same. Again, she's right. So we have to relish these few weeks a year when we can get a few strawberries into her.The kids fed the tops of their strawberries to the Boggy Creek Farm chickens, and they spent quite a bit of time in the dirt pit playing with trucks and shovels.
I also bought kohlrabi, dill, carrots, fresh garlic, and greens, but the only things in that list that I think I have a chance of getting the kids to eat are the carrots.
