saying goodbye to beloved friends

B had a pair of Thomas the Tank Engine shoes that he dearly loved. They belonged to T before B inherited them, so they had already seen a lot of wear. However, they finally got to the shape where we had to tell B it was time to say goodbye. There's a point where you know folks are looking at your child thinking, "It's too bad those parents can't afford new shoes for their child." It's not like B didn't have two or three other pairs of shoes in good (or at least better than these) shape at home. These were his favorites.

We've been prepping B for a few weeks that soon we were going to have to get rid of the Thomas shoes. He volunteered that we could pass them down to one of the kids who get his too small clothing. Daddy-o gently let him know that no, we didn't think these shoes would be able to be passed down. They needed to go to the trashcan. Click on the photo to enlarge and see how bad they really were.

Meanwhile, T began complaining yesterday that his everyday shoes had a hole in them. He was right, and it was a big hole in an inconvenient place. He also said they were getting too small, so I pulled out the next size up for him to replace his worn out shoes. He loves the new ones because they are black and neon green, so it's not as big of a loss to him. However, he did suggest we could keep the one shoe that didn't have a hole in it. Daddy-o pointed out that this was one of those things with shoes: If one is in bad shape, the other one becomes pretty useless.

So yesterday afternoon after a birthday party, we took final photos of the beloved shoes and said goodbye. The trash truck is circulating the neighborhood now, soon to come by and take these shoes to their new home in shoe heaven.
