Burger Buns

This is a recipe we've been using for several years to make homemade burger buns. The kids all like these. When we don't make the buns, we just use English muffins instead, but the kids prefer the buns. I make them in about a 3-4" diameter because that's a good kid sized bun.

Burger Buns

Medium Batch (about 12-3” buns)
about 7/8 c water
1T oil
3 c whole spelt flour
3/4 t sea salt
1 T honey or sucanat (use less water if using honey)
3 t yeast

Large batch (about 16-3” buns)
about 1.25 c water
4 t oil
4 c whole spelt flour
1 t sea salt
4 t honey or sucanat
4 t yeast

Place all ingredients in the bread machine and run on dough cycle (1 hour 30 minutes on our machine). Check after a minute or two to see if the water amount is correct and add a little more water if necessary.

After dough cycle, roll dough into 12 balls (or 8 balls for larger buns). Shape and place in an oiled baking pan. Cover and allow to rise again for about 15 minutes. Bake for about 12 minutes in a 400 degree oven. Cool and slice.

Can also be used to make hot dog buns.
