what season is it?

It is December. That means in most places it is winter. The leaves are falling off our trees, so that means it is autumn. And we live in Austin, so today it was 81+ degrees outside. That makes it summer in my book.

To celebrate such a glorious day, we bribed the kids to go outside and rake leaves. The negotiated rate was $1.50 per large brown yard waste bag (or fifty cents a kid). They filled two bags (one of which was half full when they started). J and T did a pretty good job on the job. B got bored pretty quickly. He ended up hanging out under the trampoline and pushing around the leaves under there with his dump truck. The picture at upper left is Blue Dog supervising J and B's work while T was still inside eating his second breakfast. He's been a bottomless pit again lately. He can grow one or two inches and his clothes will still fit, though.

After raking leaves in the backyard, we moved to the front yard. It also needs raking, but the kids decided to play instead. J and B rode bikes while T was throwing up a plastic baseball and hitting it with a plastic bat. He was doing pretty good at it. (Isn't baseball a spring sport?)

Then we kept hearing loud bad Christmas music on cheap speakers and the occasional wail of a fire engine siren. In our neighborhood at this time of year, it means that Santa is making the rounds on the fire truck. Normally he drives right down our street. He didn't this year, though. Daddy-o and the kids went hiking around the neighborhood looking for him, but they never found him. The picture above at right is B running around the house to see if Santa is coming.

Edited to add: Santa and the firetruck came past our house at nap time. They woke Daddy-o up. Mercifully, they didn't wake up any of the kids.
