the flourishing wildlife
It seems the summer of rains has helped the native wildlife flourish this year. We are seeing more bugs and critters and animals than normal. Yesterday there was another large frog on our back porch. While the kids enjoy this, Daddy-o and I have had less fun getting rid of roaches and moths this year which seem to have difficulty with the concept that we live inside and they live outside. The fact that the beagles will stand with their dog door open for quite a while (with their front end out the door and their back end in) doesn't help either as they let in a large number of flies back in May and June, so I suspect some of the moths are coming in that way, too.
Today's experience with the native wildlife was a bit more--- fragrant? Daddy-o and B had refilled our birdfeeder yesterday. It feeds the squirrels as much as the birds, and we rarely refill it just because we forget. But yesterday we were inspired while waiting for T&J to get home from school. This morning while T was waiting for carpool, he walked around to the front of the house to look at the birdfeeder. What he found was a skunk, probably eating the dredges which the squirrels knock to the ground. Before the skunk departed, it left a calling card to make sure we understood its displeasure at having its breakfast disturbed. Fortunately T was not sprayed. However, the area surrounding our house is now smelling just lovely.
