total eclipse of the moon
There was a total eclipse of the moon this morning that was visible in Austin. Of course, the best way to comprehend an eclipse is to sit there in a chair and watch the whole thing. However, we were not waking up the kids early because they had a very long first day of school yesterday. So when we did wake them up at 6:35 a.m., the eclipse was already partial-- the moon was only about 70% covered. We took them outside and were still able to see it. By 6:55, however, the moon had moved behind the neighbors' houses and we couldn't see it anymore.
T&J both tried to convince me that it was a waning phase of the moon. They didn't quite understand the difference between that and an eclipse. We told them to keep an eye out when they were on the highway on the way to school this morning and maybe they'd see the moon again, and when they did, the black spot would be much smaller. I think what I am going to have to do is find a time lapse video of an eclipse and show them that so they can better understand it.
