Fifth Disease
J came home from school on June 27th after Field Day with what looked like a contact rash on her arms and legs. Given the prevalence of contact rashes around our household, this wasn't surprising. We just weren't sure what it was that caused it.The next day, Daddy-o took her to the doctor mid-day because it got worse. It turns out it was Fifth Disease. This wasn't something we were expecting because she had already had Fifth Disease when she was 2 or 3. When she had it that time, it had the very classic "slapped cheeks" symptoms and nothing else. This time J had been complaining about a headache for the week prior to the rash, but due to the high mold counts and the headaches that T and I were enduring, we figured it was allergies. It turns out it wasn't.
So of course, on June 29th, the day before leaving for St. Louis, B came down with a fever of 100 which only lasted for 24 hours. A week and a day later, he broke out in a rash on his arms a
nd legs on 7/7/07. We knew what it was. The rash has gotten worse on him and seems a bit worse than it was on J. It is on his cheeks, but just mildly, and it looks nothing like slapped cheeks. It's now looking pretty horrendous, and he is complaining of itching more than J did. J's rash is still mildly around, and it does get worse when she has been in the sun.T has not broken into a rash yet (and it's possible he won't). However, one of J's classmates came to her birthday party with the same rash, so J must have exposed her before school let out. It has been going around Austin for a few months now, and we know quite a few people who have had it.
