in the minds of kids
Last night Daddy-o and I were making dinner when J freaked out in the toy room:
J: Daddy, B is feeding SODA to the baby.
Mama: It's ok, J. It's just a doll, and he's just pretending.
J: But you aren't supposed to feed soda to a baby!
Clearly her universe was thrown upside down by her younger brother who was probably doing this just to torture her. I was definitely happy, though, that she had the nutritional concept that babies don't drink soda. I was even happier upon reflection that my little Texan hasn't picked up the colloquial jargon of calling all sodas "Cokes" as they do 'round these parts. If you ask someone what kind of Coke they want, they'll often say a Sprite or Dr. Pepper. She may have a drawl that we can't prevent, but at least she's maintaining some sense of northern linguistics!
This morning Daddy-o, B and I were going to the dentist (for me). We were driving down the highway in Austin known as Mopac because it follows the MOPAC train tracks for a good part of its existence. The highway is actually named Loop 1 (even though it's not a loop), but no one calls it that except the highway signs and newbies to town. The trains provide great entertainment for kids when driving down the highway.
Anyway, we saw a southbound train sitting on the tracks waiting for a northbound train to pass so it could use the shared multi-directional rails. After we passed the first train, B asked what the engine's name on that train was. Clearly Thomas the Tank Engine has warped his mind into believing all engines have names. He also wanted to know the name of his friend engine when we passed it.
